Basic and additional equipment of the forklift

What components does a forklift consist of, and what can be done to make the vehicle even more functional and safe?

A forklift is a basic material handling vehicle, commonly used in logistics, the retail industry, the manufacturing sector or construction work. Not every forklift looks the same, but they all have one thing in common - they enable the efficient movement of heavy loads, both indoors and outdoors.

Forklift - a versatile vehicle in the enterprise

How to transport a pallet of goods, heavy boxes or a full barrel? By all means, these are not tasks that can be accomplished with the strength of human hands alone. The transportation of these and many other loads within an enterprise is usually handled by forklift operators (commonly known as forklifts or forklifts). These are vehicles equipped with an internal combustion engine, gas engine or electric motor, which improve loading and unloading, as well as intra-company transport of loads. With the installation of accessories, a forklift can also be used for other purposes, such as snow removal or earthmoving.

Forklift construction and basic equipment

Forklifts differ in their construction, dimensions and technical parameters, such as:

nominal load capacity,
reduced load capacity,
lifting height,
climbing capacity,
mast inclination,
fork travel and
turning radius.

However, it is possible to detail the basic design elements that are found in most forklifts used in Polish enterprises.

Basic forklift equipment

The most important elements of forklift construction are:

frame - the chassis of the forklift, made of steel, to which other components of the vehicle are mounted;
cab equipped with doors and windows or safety frame with canopy - a structure mounted on the frame that protects the operator from falling objects and the effects of collisions;
operator's seat - a seat in the cab or safety frame that provides the operator with comfortable control and good visibility;
controls - devices used to control the vehicle, located in the cab (driver, brake, throttle, elements responsible for tilting, raising and lowering the forks);
front wheels - drive wheels located on the front axle, usually larger than the rear wheels and without the ability to turn;
rear wheels - wheels responsible for turning the vehicle;
engine cover - a cover that protects the engine from weather and dirt, usually located under the operator's seat;
faceplate (carriage) - a component at the front of the vehicle to which the forks are attached;
mast - a structure that allows lifting and lowering the load, as well as moving it horizontally (to a small degree);
forks - narrow "L" shaped elements attached to the carriage, which allow efficient transport of loads on pallets;
counterweight - a component located on the opposite side to the mast, which equalizes the weight of the load and thus prevents the vehicle from tipping over.

Basic forklift equipment can also include safety features that provide protection for the vehicle operator. These include:

a safety grille to prevent the load from sliding off,
safety belts in the cabin,
guards (engine, muffler and exhaust pipe),
an emergency stop switch, and
battery protection on electric vehicles.

Forklifts must also ensure the safety of people near the operating range of the vehicle. Accordingly, equipment should consist of:

full lighting (headlights and taillights, stop lights, turn signals, reverse light),
sounder,
rearview mirrors and
parking brake.

Forklift accessory equipment

Forklifts can also be equipped with a range of equipment and accessories to make the vehicle even better suited to the specific needs of the company. Special safety systems for forklifts are also available to reduce the risk of entering into collisions with other workers (pedestrians and vehicle operators), building structures and workplace equipment.

Accessories to increase forklift functionality

A forklift is a very versatile vehicle that can be used to transport loads placed on pallets and in other transport packages (such as boxes or barrels). With the right equipment, the forklift operator can also perform other work for the company.

Additional accessories for forklifts include:

fork extensions for transporting bulky loads;
carrier pins for transporting loads formed into a circle (such as wire);
buckets for transporting loose materials and earthworks;
grabs for transporting unstable loads (e.g., pipes, bales of paper or fabric, barrels);
plows and snow plow blades;
booms for transporting bulky loads and unloading containers;
turntables for emptying containers;
work platform for working at heights (e.g., changing lights);
fork adjustment equipment (e.g., side shift, fork positioner).

The company can also implement a mobile paging system for forklifts, which allows quick response in case of problems, such as supply shortages or machine breakdowns.

Accessory equipment for greater workplace safety

Safety precautions can never be too much, especially when there are difficult conditions around (noise, poor visibility) and the fast pace of work is not conducive to exercising proper caution. What accessories, devices and systems provide greater protection for the forklift operator and those around the vehicle?

Greater safety in the forklift workplace is provided by:

searchlights, which are additional lights that make it easier to perform work at night and in low light conditions;
yellow signal lamps used in high-traffic areas, such as construction sites and loading ports;
vehicle fire extinguishers, which are used especially when the truck is working away from a fixed fire point;
Red Zone lamps, which emit light to designate a safety zone around the vehicle;
theIPAS pedestrian and forklift warning system, which sends the forklift operator an alert (vibration, sound, light) if there is a possibility of a collision with a pedestrian worker or another company vehicle;
IVIEW+ motion detection camera system, which provides a camera view of the surroundings and warns the vehicle operator of the approach of a pedestrian worker (with an audible and light alarm).

Forklift equipment - summary

Forklifts provide efficient transport of loads within an enterprise or designated work area (e.g. construction site, demolition site). These vehicles vary in construction, but the basic elements of construction and equipment can be distinguished, i.e. the frame, operator's cab or safety frame, drive and swivel wheels, load lifting system (mast, grille, forks) and counterweight. Forklifts can also be fitted with additional equipment that increases work efficiency and allows them to perform other tasks as well (such as minor work at heights). Due to the numerous risks associated with transporting heavy loads, a forklift can also be retrofitted with additional accessories to increase safety and anti-collision systems.
