Safety in the warehouse is a key aspect of efficient and responsible work. Warehouse accidents can lead to serious consequences, both material and employee health. The use of appropriate safeguards and modern technologies can significantly reduce the risk of dangerous incidents, ensuring smooth and safe warehouse operations.
The consequences of warehouse accidents can range from damage to the equipment and structure of the hall, to the destruction of stored goods, to the loss of health and life of an employee. Each of the aforementioned situations carries a cost and is often associated with additional problems, such as long-term employee absenteeism, business downtime or loss of a contractor. Once various types of safeguards are implemented, the consequences of accidents can be avoided, thus ensuring smooth and timely warehouse operations.
To increase the safety and comfort of employees, you can start with simple and inexpensive solutions. A good example is special floor tapes for warehouse marking. These are strong tapes with very good adhesion, with the help of which you can delineate individual workstations or paths. Well-placed markings improve work in the warehouse and prevent collisions between pedestrian workers and forklift operators. Another simple (yet effective) safety device is a metal foot guard for a pallet truck. After using such a guard, the pallet truck operator can avoid painful injury to the foot, and thus the associated complications (such as immobilization of the limb, long-term rehabilitation).
Marking tapes and various types of warning signals will increase safety in the warehouse without incurring large costs. However, the same effect can also be achieved with modern signage, which is much more practical and effective. Instead of traditional signs, stickers and standing signs, LED sign projectors can be used in health and safety. These are special projectors that can display a given message (e.g. STOP sign, company logo, important textual information) anywhere. In turn, traffic routes and work zones can be delineated by a virtual line, that is, a laser light directed in the desired direction. Such protection will prove useful wherever marking tape or paint fails.
Simple security measures are not enough when the warehouse is busy like a street intersection, and the constant noise makes it difficult to hear an oncoming vehicle. In this situation, it is worth investing in forklift cameras, which allow operators to observe the entire environment without turning their heads. The driver also does not have to worry about a collision with a pedestrian in the so-called blind spot. What's more, the camera can cooperate with a sensor that scans the surroundings in 3 dimensions, which warns of the appearance of an obstacle (e.g. a pedestrian, another vehicle, a wall). Thus, the anti-collision 3D camera helps avoid a collision even without constantly watching the screen.
Large warehouse halls are constantly noisy, so workers often do not hear oncoming vehicles or audible alarms. This problem can be eliminated by the light of the Red Zone lamp, which marks the working space around machinery and vehicles (e.g. forklifts, tractors, cranes). Thanks to such a solution, other workers know at what distance they can approach the object in question and can notice the danger in time.
Fast-moving forklifts are, unfortunately, not the only danger to warehouse workers. Accidents also occur with lifting equipment, such as when pulling a pallet of goods off a rack. However, you can ensure the safety of workers by using crane warning lights. These are special projectors that use light lines to delineate the goods unloading zone. Thus, the crane operator gains greater precision when placing the load, and other workers know where not to pass.
In large warehouses, where there is constant traffic and a lot of noise, it is common for two forklifts to collide or for pedestrian workers to collide with industrial vehicles. To reduce the danger as much as possible, modern anti-collision solutions can be used. As an example, here is a rack warning system that eliminates the risk of vehicles or pedestrians colliding with vehicles at intersections between warehouse racks.
IPAS, a pedestrian and cart warning system, is also an interesting solution. It is a set of devices that communicate with each other and warn each other of a potential collision (e.g. a pedestrian worker with a forklift, two forklifts). Another safety feature that can be applied to industrial vehicles and forklifts is the SIS-MINI 1.0 collision avoidance system. This system works in two ways - it first warns of the danger and then causes the vehicle to brake automatically.
